A 24-year-old Somali man was given an 18-month-jail term suspended for three years after he admitted to assaulting two police officers who intervened when they saw him banging on a telephone box.

Ahmed Moogie Ahmed, who lives in Gzira, admitted to assaulting constables Daniel Zammit and Joseph Camilleri yesterday at about 5.45am in St Julians.

He also admitted to disobeying the officers, breaching the peace and being drunk in public.

The incident happened when the two officers spotted Mr Ahmed banging on the telephone box and shouting in anger. When they intervened to stop him Mr Ahmed grabbed Mr Zammit from the neck and tried to bite Mr Camilleri.

Police Inspector Elton Taliana prosecuted.
