Malta’s healthcare facilities and not Mater Dei Hospital itself would have 400 new beds for acute cases in the coming years once hospital plans were reorganised, Parliamentary Secretary Chris Fearne said.

The issue of bed shortage was first raised by former health minister Godfrey Farrugia in January when he had said Mater Dei required 400 more beds for acute cases.

Clarifying comments he made in yesterday’s edition of The Sunday Times of Malta, Mr Fearne, a paediatric surgeon, said that, by this winter, 40 new beds would be added to Mater Dei through better reorganisation.
