A Maya Universe Academy event at The Xara Lodge has raised €10,000 for children in Nepal. The academy is a social entrepreneurial venture that sustains itself through volunteerism, agriculture and handicraft products.

During her stay in Maya in 2013, volunteer Hannah Cremona noticed some students did not have a snack for lunch because their families could not provide them with any or because they weren’t sponsored like other children.

A food programme was launched last April with the help of a number of Maltese sponsors, whereby children get eggs three times a week as a source of protein. This project was well received by the Mayans but was terribly unsustainable. So ideas for an egg farm started to materialise.

“Everything we are trying to do encompasses developing a community in a very different manner, making it sustainable but making it happier too”, said the academy’s co-founder Surya Karki Nepali.

The sponsors include Vivian Corporation, Red October, AV Warehouse, Carla Grima Atelier, Yana’s Jewellery, Models M, NYX Cosmetics, The New Victorians and Electro Swing Malta.
