This is an earnest plea to the clergy vilifying the Catholic administration in Malta. I am sure that many have the best intentions, but there are others with less pure objectives. Both, however, provide fodder to those with strong anti-clerical or anti-Christian tendencies.

When faced with problems, it is not right to tackle such grudges in public. If you are so sure of your positions, the only way forward is to petition the Holy See to appoint a person or delegation to evaluate the situation in Malta. It is unfortunate that certain aspects of religion have been used to foment hatred and spite. This goes exactly contrary to Christ’s teachings.

Jesus had stressed that before offering any sacrifice, one must first examine his conscience and if at odds with one’s brother, to leave the offer aside and seek to make amends. Obviously, this instruction applies equally to both brothers. There are never those who are completely good or who are fully bad. The way forward is to avoid confrontations, do away with privileges and seek a logical way forward.

The interpretation and implementation of our religion is not a matter for opposing groups. Jesus was emphatic that no one should aim for the front seats. Past experience has shown that both sides will suffer in the long run. The clergy have a clear choice, either serve God or partisan politics.

Yes, we can live in peace with each other as long as we avoid confrontational situations. Vatican II had studied all aspects and those who do not agree are at fault. Regarding feasts, these are an outward manifestation and should be encouraged. The fault lies in underhand instigation. Stop all privileges. Study why there is animosity in each particular case and take the necessary actions. Above all, do not use any preferential treatment but strive for unity.

Malta has changed in these last decades and the majority will not accept impositions of certain morals and ethics. The Church must educate and show the way forward, but it cannot impose on those who do not want to listen as otherwise it will further antagonise much of the population.

By the way, can we have a short list of those aspiring to become Archbishop?
