Malta has proposed the setting up of an International Commission for National Reconciliation in Libya.

The proposal was made by Foreign Minister George Vella during meetings of European Foreign Ministers in Milan.

The meetings also discussed Ukraine, Syria, Iraq and the peace process in the Middle East.

Dr Vella insisted that unless Libya was given the attention it deserved, it could become another Iraq. The minister explained in detail the complexity of the situation, the continuous changes taking place and the developments that could arise from such a delicate matter.

Dr Vella warned against military intervention saying the EU’s duty was to help Libya solve its problems. He recommended technical, humanitarian and political assistance and the keeping of an open dialogue with all factions.

The EU, he said, should help control the distribution of arms and ammunition and ideally work for the setting up of an International Commission for National Reconciliation.

He said the Maltese government currently considered the Tobruk government as the legitimate one but it was willing to dialogue with everyone.

He said Malta was part of an envoy being coordinated with the UN special representative Bernardino Leon.
