A record number of 92 swimmers will be taking part in this year’s swimming races across the Gozo-Malta channel organised annually by Birkirkara St Joseph Sports Club under the auspices of the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta.

This was announced by the club at the events’ pre-race meeting on Tuesday.

This year another record number of swimmers participated in the open water swimming championships organised by the club. In all, 214 took part in the six championship races.

Tomorrow, 81 swimmers will be racing across the channel from Gozo, while 11 will be doing double the distance starting from Malta.

The channel will be closed for maritime traffic during the races.

The Malta-Gozo-Malta swim starts at 6.30am from Marfa while the Gozo-Malta swim gets underway at 8.15am from il-Blata tal-Ħalfa.

All swimmers will be accompanied by an escort boat.

Participants will be collecting funds in favour of ACICA (Assistance to Children in Care Association), the charitable institution twinned with the club’s events and activities.

Festina Watches will be the main sponsors in these events.
