Christina Betke, the woman who was controversially taken to court for dancing in a bikini during a Sliema band march, has produced a shirt highlighting the episode and its coverage on Times of Malta.

Betke, a fashion designer, was kept overnight in a cell at police headquarters and then taken to court, where she was fined for disturbing a service of the Catholic Church.

A statue was being carried during the band march when the incident happened on Saturday night.  Ms Betke had just disembarked from a pleasure boat, where she admitted to having taken a few drinks.

In court she pleaded guilty and apologised.

In a subsequent interview with Times of Malta she said she is a Catholic who got carried away by the festivities.

“I was raised a Catholic and had no intention of disrespecting the festa, quite the contrary. I’m sure God will forgive me.”

She had also promised to use her talents to raise funds for Stella Maris Church in Sliema.

True to her word she has now produced 'Dance like Christina' shirts which she plans to sell in order to raise funds for Stella Maris.

Times of Malta had reported that members of the legal community viewed the police action against her as  “overzealous” and that the woman should never have been taken to court.

Ms Betke also found a wave a support in the comments board of Times of Malta.

She announced her shirt fund-raiser on Facebook.
