I fully concur with Philip Farrugia Randon’s contribution ‘Wrong target for criticism’ (August 22) about Archbishop Paul Cremona.

I have known the Archbishop for many years and always admired his humility, his spirituality, his outgoing attitude towards those – young and old – who come in contact with him, his sincere and open smile, his pacific nature.

But, then, just like you and me and all human beings, he has his defects and, in this day and age, being a member of the clergy and an archbishop, his defects would be more than visible.

At the moment, as Farrugia Randon rightly puts it, he seems to be a target of criticism from inside and outside circles. This is nothing new to the Church of Christ, which has also been bombarded in the past and will continue to be in the future, till the end of the world.

As regards criticism, I don’t see anything wrong with expressing one’s opinion, be it positive or negative, as long as it is always expressed with love, respect and prudence. We live in a democratic country where the Church, albeit enjoying the respect of the majority, is very often criticised by those who feel proud going against God’s teachings.

I feel that if there is a problem, it should be tackled by those concerned in a fraternal and prudent way in the right circles, with only one aim in mind: our constant love for God and His teachings.

Nobody can deny the fact that, most of the time, the agenda of the author of certain contributions is definitely not the well-being and love for the Church but to condemn all that is holy or which is in some way attached to the Church.
