The introduction of more vocational subjects in secondary schools, as well as new courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level is being proposed by a draft policy on vocational and educational training.
The document was unveiled to the social partners this morning at meeting of the Malta Council of Economic and Social Development (MCESD). The policy covers the six-year period till 2020 and was presented by the National Commission for Further and Higher Education.
Social Dialogue Minister Helena Dalli lauded the initiative saying that Malta lacked skilled workers in certain vocational subjects. She added that this policy would help to address this shortcoming.
The policy also suggests joint research programmes and initiatives between the University and the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology. A number of studies are also being proposed, including an analysis on the challenges for students coming from low-income families.
Other proposals include the setting up of a trust fund for the private sector, to encourage investment in research initiatives.
Support schemes for business start-ups tied to vocational sectors deemed essential for industry are also being proposed.
