A 45-year-old part-time fisherman who allegedly caught two tuna outside the season and without having a licence, ended up in court this morning.

Alfred Previ, a government-employed watchman from Fgura, was charged with illegal fishing and illegal possession of tuna.

He allegedly caught the fish, weighing 50 and 31 kilos, outside territorial waters and was stopped when he returned to St Thomas Bay early on August 13.

He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail against a personal guarantee of  €1,000.

Earlier this month a Gozitan fisherman, Andrew Azzopardi of Xewkija, was fined €7,800 for an illegal, out of season  catch of €700 worth of dolphin fish (lampuki).

Dr Charmaine Cherrett  was defence counsel.
