London is a great city to explore on foot, but as it is so large, choosing which area to see can be a challenge.

Literature lovers could follow a Book Bench trail, a series of temporary installations in the British capital.

Different artists decorated blank bench sculptures that look like open books with images inspired by UK novels and authors.

From sci-fi hits like Douglas Adams’s The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series, to classic Orwell, Dickens and Wilde, to modern publications such as War Horse and Bridget Jones’ Diary, there is a genre for all.

Fifty are on the streets and visitors can track down a particular bench by downloading one of four maps from www.booksabouttown.org.uk.

Options are the Greenwich Trail in the royal borough, the Bloombury Trail with its many geographical links to famous writers, the bustling City Trail and the Riverside Trail, which takes in City Hall, The Shard and the Globe Theatre.

Organisers National Literacy Trust and Wild in Art are putting on events at different benches over the summer before they are removed on September 15.

On October 7, all 50 will be auctioned in aid of National Literacy Trust and it is possible to bid online through the website.
