Alfred Brincat (The Sunday Times of Malta, August 17) rightly pointed out some common mistakes that have taken root among the population, like the wrong use of ‘għalfejn’ instead of ‘għaliex’ (why).

However, something that irks me and probably many other lovers of the Maltese language is the wrong, but unfortunately, widespread use (even on TV by people who should know better) of such words as ‘taraha’, ‘tarahom’, wrongly pronounced with a hard ‘ħ’ instead of the correct silent ‘h’.

This mistake is committed especially with a host of words derived from Italian and English and is probably due to confusion with words like ‘tismagħha’, ‘tismagħhom’ (correctly pronounced with a hard ‘ħ’).

Are the authorities of the Maltese language as well as teachers of Maltese doing enough to counter this mistake which is seemingly spreading so fast, particularly among the younger generations? I believe much more should be done.
