The feature about the Nazi plan to invade Malta (August 11) made interesting and nostalgic reading. For the record, I lived through those days.

However, with all due respect to the CIA, I think its report was based on inaccurate information. The Germans, of course, knew that our defences were really poor and could not offer any resistance.

What really happened, I think, was that Hitler phoned Kesserling, telling him: “Forget Malta, we are now planning the Russian campaign. Malta will, eventually, capitulate for lack of food, ammunition and air supremacy.”

So, actually, I think it was Hitler that saved the day for Malta because a simple effort at invasion would have been met with very poor resistance at that time.

The Germans knew that our defences were very weak.

Of course, I also feel that divine providence also had a significant say in the matter.
