Further to Martin Scicluna’s excellent article about World War I (August 13) there was, in fact, a Memorial of Remembrance held in Valletta on August 3.

A Service of Remembrance and Reflection was held at St Paul’s Pro Cathedral, which included hymns and readings relevant to World War I and a bugler to sound The Last Post, remembering all the lives sacrificed, including, of course, the many Maltese.

The war produced a generation of spinsters – young women who had lost their fiancés and sweethearts as well as many widows who would never be able to marry as so few young men returned.

War destroys.
