A nursing aide who was injured while at work in Paola Health Centre and awarded €31,000 in compensation, this morning complained that medicines she is taking are no longer given for free by Mater Dei hospital.

Alexia Muscat said in a judicial protest that during the court case where she sought compensation for her injuries, the Director General of Public Health and the Chief Government Medical Officer objected to her claim for payment for medicine. They argued that once the medicines were given for free from Mater Dei hospital then she should not receive an extra payment.

The situation has now changed and she was told to pay for the medication as it was expensive, Ms Muscat said.

Ms Muscat had suffered with a 10 per cent disability when in October 1999, she fell down a ladder, a distance of some 1.5 metres, while retrieving a patient’s file. In July last year she was awarded €31,446.54 in damages by a court.

Lawyer Joe Brincat said his client had a right to receive free medication for the injuries she suffered as a result of an unsafe work environment.
