A monument commemorating Dom Mintoff is complete and will be unveiled in Cospicua on December 11, the Labour Party said.

Cospicua was Mr Mintoff’s birthplace and political stronghold and the inauguration date was close to Republic Day, the PL said in a statement exactly two years since the former Labour leader and prime minister passed away.

The monument, in Paolino Vassallo Square, is sculpted in stone that looks similar to Maltese limestone. It was designed by Noel Galea Bason whose entry was chosen from among17 submitted in a PL contest.

Mr Galea Bason chose to highlight Mr Mintoff’s intellectual side, deeming it the aspect most people, even adversaries, would agree upon.

The monument shows Mr Mintoff in a calm and intellectual pose dressed in what Prime Minister Joseph Muscat had described as Oxfordian attire.

In one hand he holds a pipe and his other hand is in his pocket.

When the party announced the chosen monument on the first anniversary of his death, Dr Muscat had said the monument was already paid for, as Mr Mintoff would have demanded, thanks to fundraising activities organised by a committee set up for the purpose.
