Mueller: Bayern Munich striker Thomas Mueller has revealed that he turned down an “astronomical” offer to join Manchester United this summer. Mueller had been tipped for a move to Old Trafford to link up with United boss Louis Van Gaal. When asked whether he knew of United’s interest, Mueller said: “Of course – I was aware I could theoretically earn more with a transfer. The sums that were standing by from foreign clubs were astronomical.”

Fernandez: Swansea have signed Argentina defender Federico Fernandez from Napoli. The Swans stated on their website that Fernandez has signed a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee, subject to international clearance. The 25-year-old passed a medical earlier this week, and he is ex-pected to be in Swansea’s squad for their league game against Burnley on Saturday.

Hangeland: Norway defender Brede Hangeland has quit the international stage, bringing the curtain down on a 12-year career during which he captained his country and won 91 caps. “For many years I have had very high demands on my body and at the age of 33 it feels essential to make this decision,” the beanpole Crystal Palace centre-half said. Hangeland joined Palace from relegated Fulham, the club he joined in 2008, earlier this month.

Pieters: Stoke City defender Erik Pieters is among four players who missed out on the World Cup that were called up in a 25-man squad for the Netherlands’ two internationals next month. Pieters, Rafael van der Vaart, Gregory van der Wiel and goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet were all named in the first squad for new coach Guus Hiddink.

Dzeko: Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko has agreed a new four-year contract which will keep him at the club until at least 2018. City boss Manuel Pellegrini was keen to tie up a long-term deal for the Bosnia international who starred in his side’s Premier League opener at Newcastle on Sunday.

Fer: QPR have announced the signing of Leroy Fer from Norwich for an undisclosed fee with the midfielder penning a three-year deal at Loftus Road. The 24-year-old, who scored for Holland in their 2-0 World Cup group stage victory over Chile, only moved to Norwich last summer but has left the Norfolk club following their relegation from the Premier League.
