Real Madrid will await the result of checks on Cristiano Ronaldo’s back injury before deciding whether he is fit to play in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup against city rivals Atletico Madrid tomorrow.

He was substituted at half-time in Tuesday’s first leg at the Bernabeu stadium, which finished in a 1-1 draw.

Ronaldo’s replacement, the new signing from Monaco James Rodriguez, put the European champions ahead with his first goal for the club with 10 minutes left but Raul Garcia equalized two minutes from time.

“Cristiano felt something and was uncomfortable,” Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti said.

“We’ll evaluate it. He’ll undergo all the checks and we’ll see. It doesn’t seem to be anything too serious.”

There was little of the flair that saw Real beat Sevilla in European Super Cup a week ago and, although there were several new names in the Atletico side from last season, they maintained the same solidity that saw them win La Liga.

Atletico host Real at the Calderon tomorrow where they will be seeking revenge for their defeat in the Champions League final by their city rivals.

“There is everything to play for now. I got the goal but it could have been anyone in the team. We now have another match at home and the chance of lifting a trophy,” Garcia told reporters.

Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso reckons Atletico were favourites to land the first domestic honour of the new Spanish season.

“They were compact and very difficult to play against. We did our best but we were unable to break them down,” he told reporters.

“We have to go now to their stadium and score a goal which puts them in the driving seat.”

Real Madrid continue a busy start to the season by playing their first league match against lowly Cordoba on Monday night.
