Sweden’s Social Affairs Minister had a pie thrown in his face while campaigning for next month’s parliamentary election.

The incident happened in Gothenburg, Sweden’s second-largest city, where Goran Hagglund (picture) was giving a campaign speech for his Christian Democratic Party.

Gothenburg police said the pie thrower, a man in his 20s, was arrested on a preliminary charge of harassment.

The Swedish Security Service, which protects Cabinet ministers, said that its agents escorted Hagglund from the scene and that he was unharmed.

Zoo invader’s not having a giraffe

A woman had a closer encounter with a giraffe than she was expecting when she climbed into a zoo exhibit and got kicked in the face.

Amanda Hall, 24, of San Luis Obispo, California, climbed over one fence and almost got over the second fence of the enclosure at the Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, Wisconsin.

A two-year-old, 12-foot giraffe named Wally gave Hall a lick, then turned and kicked her in the face.

Hall was fined $686 (€515) for harassment of zoo animals. She reportedly told officials she climbed into the exhibit because she likes giraffes.

Fishy business

A 33-year-old British binman who drank four fish in a cocktail of alcohol has walked free from court after being charged with animal cruelty.

Paul Wooding, of Brampton Avenue, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, was sentenced at Hereford Magistrates’ Court, over two offences linked to the online Neknominate craze, in an incident in a pub in February.

Wooding was handed an 18-month conditional discharge, concurrent, for causing unnecessary suffering to an animal, and also for failing to protect the fish, (picture) after being prosecuted by the RSPCA.

Lifeboat rescues sleep swimmer

A man who rolled into the River Thames after falling asleep on an embankment wall was rescued by a lifeboat crew.

He woke up as he was falling through the air and into the water near Blackfriars Bridge in central London in the early hours, the RNLI said. After swimming to a nearby riverbank, he was able to raise the alarm and await rescue from the crew.

Best-smelling burglars in town

UK thieves broke into a pound shop stealing almost £5,000 (€6,240) worth of anti-dandruff shampoo, toiletries and floor cleaner.

West Midlands Police said the Pound Plus store in Winson Green, Birmingham, was broken into in the early hours of July 17.

According to officers, thieves stole Head & Shoulders and Palmolive shampoo, Colgate toothpaste, car air fresheners, cigarette lighters and Zoflora cleaning fluid.

Centenarian is firm’s bright light

US citizen Herman ‘Hy’ Goldman turned 101 last weekend and will not quit after 73 years working in the same job.

Goldman still shows up four days a week at light fixtures company Capitol Lighting in New Jersey. His co-workers celebrated his birthday with him on Monday. Aside from serving in the US army in World War II, Goldman has worked at the firm since 1941.
