Restoration of the statue of Jesus the Saviour at the top of the hill overlooking Marsalforn started this morning and is expected to continue till October.

An AFM helicopter this morning ferried scaffolding which will be set up around the statue.

The work will include removal of old, damaged fibreglass and its replacement. The statue will also be covered with a gel coat.

The Gozo Ministry, which is sponsoring the project, said work was particularly needed around the top of the statue after it was struck by lightning.

A new lighting system using PV panels will also be installed.

Gozo Minister Anton Refalo watched work getting underway this morning and thanked all those responsible.
