Parliamentary Secretary Chris Fearne this morning carried out a surprise inspection of catering services at Mater Dei Hospital following a number of complaints.

Dr Fearne inspected the food and service provided to patients in the wards.

The secretariat said the general view was that the service was good, but more should be done to make it better.

Meanwhile, the Secretariat for Care for the Elderly said it had introduced a new mechanism for the filing of complaints on old people’s homes. That would include a dedicated phone line and e-mail address. Details would be announced shortly.

The team which would handle the complaints would compile a report on requirements in each home.

The new mechanism follows a surprise visit by Parliamentary Secretary Justyne Caruana to Msida home, where she noted several shortcomings.
