Julio Cesar: Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar has joined Benfica where he will attempt to revive his career after an unhappy last season and a disappointing World Cup. The Portuguese champions, who recently sold first-choice goalkeeper Jan Oblak to Atletico Madrid, confirmed that the 34-year-old had signed a two-year contract.

Drury: St Mirren have completed the signing of Manchester City utility player Adam Drury on a season-long loan. The 20-year-old joins Ellis Plummer, his team-mate in City’s elite development squad, at St Mirren Park. Drury, who can play at full-back or on the wing, joined City from Grimsby in 2011.

Gordon dies: James Alexander Gordon, who read out the football results on BBC radio for 40 years and had one of the most recognisable voices in broadcasting, has died at the age of 78. Gordon’s unmistakeable tones were a feature of BBC sports reporting from 1973 until he retired in 2013 after having surgery for throat cancer. Nicknamed ‘Jag’ because of his initials, Gordon would change his delivery to indicate whether a result was a home win, an away win or a draw.

Fer: Leroy Fer is to undergo a medical at QPR ahead of £7 million move from Norwich, reports said. The 24-year-old midfielder impressed after moving to Carrow Road from FC Twente last summer, although was unable to help the club avoid relegation.

Olsson: Norwich defender Martin Olsson has been handed a further three-game ban by the FA after he admitted a charge of improper conduct. The 26-year-old appeared to push referee Simon Hooper when he was sent off during the 1-0 defeat by Wolves at Molineux on August 10. The three-match ban is in addition to the one already served for the red card itself, which was the result of two bookings.

Boerrigter: Celtic winger Derk Boerrigter has accepted a two-match ban for diving. Boerrigter was offered the punishment after the Scottish FA’s compliance officer accused him of simulation over the penalty that put Celtic 2-0 up against St Johnstone last week. And the SFA has confirmed that Celtic will not challenge the ban.
