A group of university students from the communications and engineering faculties have built an open wheel race car from scratch and will be using it to compete at an event with other universities around the world.

The group of 15 students spent two years working on this project in their free time and on weekends. They designed the model themselves and built it around a motorcycle 600cc engine.

They will be going to Parma at the end of this month to compete in the Formula ATA 2014 competition.

The car, said to have cost €30,000, was funded through sponsorships from Transport Malta and other companies in the private sector.

At the unveiling this morning, Education Minister Evarist Bartolo and Transport Minister Joe Mizzi praised the students for their initiative and wished them success in the upcoming event.
