For the umpteenth time, together with other correspondents, I have written about pavements which are built, not with the pedestrians’ safety in mind, but funnily enough, to accommodate cars so they may be driven smoothly in and out of garages.
It seems that whoever approves non-level pavements simply doesn’t care about elderly people, those with a walking aid or wheelchair-bound and mothers pushing babies in buggies. The list is much longer.
Very recently, during the programme Familja Waħda on Radju Malta, a guest replying to a query by a listener, said that the hollows built in front of garages are illegal.
About 10 days ago, on the same programme, a Mepa representative said pavements built like this are legal.
I hate to say this because I love my country, but presumably, such things happen only in Malta. No wonder we do not agree on important issues when we even disagree on simple things.
I know that the associations of the elderly and the commission for people with certain disabilities do a lot of work to protect vulnerable people. However, they need to protest more against such broad-daylight abuses.
