Bayern: Injury-hit Bayern Munich crushed third-tier Preussen Muenster 4-1 away yesterday to bounce back from their midweek Super Cup defeat and launch a successful defence of their German Cup title. Bayern were eager to make amends for Wednesday's 2-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund and first half goals from Mario Goetze and Thomas Mueller put them in the driving seat before David Alaba’s thundering drive gave them a three-goal cushion early in the second half. Substitute Claudio Pizarro then chipped the ball over goalkeeper Daniel Masuch to punch their ticket for round two.

Rwanda: Rwanda have been thrown out of the qualifiers for the 2015 African Nations Cup in Morocco after fielding a player plying his trade under two identities, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) said yesterday. Congo appealed to CAF over Rwanda’s use of forward Dady Birori, who plays for AS Vita Club in the Democratic Republic of Congo with a passport from the African country under the name of Etekiama Agiti Tady and with a different age.

Guangzhou: Chinese champions Guangzhou Evergrande extended their lead at the top of the Super League to 10 points after a dramatic 93rd minute goal by Liu Jian gave them a 2-1 home win over Tianjin Teda. Liu just beat the offside trap to cleverly divert Gao Lin’s acrobatic overhead kick into the net to give Marcello Lippi’s team a third consecutive league win.

Ajax: Lasse Schone was among the goals for a second successive week as Dutch champions Ajax Amsterdam won 3-1 away to spoil the home debut of new AZ Alkmaar coach Marco van Basten. The victory means Ajax share the early season lead with PEC Zwolle and PSV Eindhoven.

Townsend: Tottenham have no interest in selling England winger Andros Townsend. Reports over recent days have linked the 23-year-old with a move away from White Hart Lane. Southampton, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino’s old club, have been said to have been considering a £10m move for Townsend, but Pochettino doesn’t want the player to leave.
