August is set to end with a four-day musical journey fusing vintage and modern pop culture, thanks to Magic Island. The event combines four locations, over 50 musicians and performers from seven countries who will be playing electro swing, Balkan beats and nu jazz, while offering other attractions such as a vintage market, dance classes and food markets.

Magic Island kicks off on Thursday with a rooftop exhibition and launch party at The Palace Hotel, Sliema. The exhibition showcases French artist Liso Cassano’s works, a photographic essay about freedom, body and spirituality. Using watercolouring on a black and white nude, the artist proposes to look at the body like if it was a canvas to paint. Music for the night will be provided by French DJs Missill, Kiwistar and Julien Vinet.

Celebrations continue on Friday with Enchanted Garden, a hive of artistic activity at Sa Maison gardens. Main highlights include a vintage market, swing dancing classes, art installations, live bands playing swing, manouche and nu jazz, and DJs playing a fusion of retro and modern musical styles, including electro swing, Balkan beats and future funk.

Featured artists include Django Unchained (Malta), Voodoo Gurus (Gozo), Dragon’s Monk (France), Tiger Rag Club (Freiburg/Berlin), Nikola Vujicic (Serbia), Swingers’ Club (Frankfurt), Joe & Lea (Lindy-Hop Freiburg) and Vassili Gemini (France).

Saturday sees a full-blown electroswing party taking place at the Beach Haven Club, Xemxija, with: a live performance by Viennese band Kiss Me Yesterday; a burlesque performance by Lily de Luxe and pumping sets from Kiwistar (France); KimSka, Paavo and Jonalisa (Germany); K.D.S (France); Malalata Sound System (Czech Republic); and Zicotron, Dockerbone and The Chef (Electro swing Malta). Joe and Lea from Lindy-Hop Freiburg will also be teaching some hot moves for the dance floor.

Magic Island comes to an end next Sunday with a boat party aboard Hornblower, featuring an eclectic mash-up of electronic music from French DJ Missill and the Swing is Swag crew.

Magic Island takes place at different venues between Thursday and next Sunday.
