The practice of sport is a basic human right entrenched in the Charter of the United Nations, observed and encouraged by all civilised countries with state- funded activities in the form of “Sport For All”.
Sport is not considered as a luxury but a God-given right and an expectation.
In fact it is incumbent on leaders in any field of human activity to organise physical recreation of any type for the physical and mental well- being of its workforce.
It is therefore inconceivablein this day and age for the Employers’ Association to submit such retrograde proposals that discourage participationin sport, a blatant breach of human rights.
It is also a sign of the times that no national sports association , not even the Sports Council , has taken up the cudgels to back the trade unions in this shocking proposal. Perhaps the silly season of lethargic apathy is having its toll.
In the past, to improve the welfare of the workers the employers themselves, through a very active Industry Sports Association ably led by a gentleman sportsman, John Casha, organised various leagues and activities in every sports field for all employees.
In the name of fair play, the association’s inhuman submission should be withdrawn before we become the laughing stock of the Western world.
