I take this opportunity to express my gratitude for a wonderful visit to Malta, after a six-year absence. The land of my father’s birth is a wonderful country and I am proud to acknowledge my Maltese heritage.

In particular, may I acknowledge the immense efforts being made to preserve and respect Malta’s historical treasures. Their significance extends far beyond these islands and are a bequest held in trust for future generations.

I was proud to see Australia Hall in Pembroke recently, as it underlines the long history shared by Australia and Malta. The hall emphasised Malta’s wonderful role in the care of so many Australian soldiers during the Dardanelles campaign and beyond, in a war which holds a sacred place in the Australian consciousness.

However, I am saddened by the derelict state of the building. I fear that if nothing is done soon, this powerful symbol of healing and friendship will be lost to us.

At this time of remembrance of World War I, I make a plea to the Maltese authorities that the Australia Hall be prioritised for preservation.
