Giuseppe Rossi has suffered a fresh injury setback during training for Fiorentina’s friendly meeting with Real Madrid.

The Italy striker, who has previously undergone two operations to reconstruct damaged cruciate ligaments, missed the World Cup finals due to a knee injury suffered in January.

Rossi, 27, was looking to step up his recovery against European champions Real in Warsaw on Saturday night but has now been ruled out of the Stadion Norodowy encounter.

A statement published on Fiorentina’s official website read: “Giuseppe Rossi sustained a thigh muscle injury during Thursday’s training session and therefore will not take part in the match against Real Madrid in Warsaw.

“The striker still needs to undergo tests to determine the extent of the injury.”

Since joining Fiorentina in January 2013, injuries have limited Rossi’s playing time. Nevertheless, the former Manchester United player has scored 16 Serie A goals in only 22 appearances for La Viola.
