A used pregnancy test kit and a blood-stained diary were among the items recovered from the bedroom of Lisa Maria Zahra, 15, a magistrate heard yesterday.

Police Constable Patrick Farrugia said the items were required for DNA tests.

He was testifying in the case against Erin Tanti, 23, her teacher, who is pleading not guilty to the girl’s murder on March 19 and assisting her to commit suicide at Dingli Cliffs.

He is also charged with defiling her, participating in sexual acts and being in possession of indecent images of her.

The officer said that he lifted a number of samples from the room including a used pregnancy test kit, a blood-stained diary, dried green leaves, underwear and socks, which were all given to DNA expert Marisa Cassar.

He said the room looked like that of a normal teenage girl.

Colonel Claudio Spiteri exhibited two DVDs containing footage of the helicopter rescue of the accused, who told the police he too had tried to commit suicide.

Col Spiteri said the rescuers had Go Pro cameras on their helmets. The footage was raw and unedited.

A firefighter from the Civil Protection Department, Emanuel Psaila, testified that, together with a colleague, he had assisted the police to enter an apartment in Felice Street, Valletta, where Mr Tanti resided.

They used a ladder to climb to a balcony where a door was spotted ajar and then opened the front door to allow police in.

The case continues on September 25.
