A driver is fighting for his life after the truck trailer he was driving overturned, ending up resting on its side in Garibaldi Road, Marsa, yesterday.

The incident happened at about 11.30am as the driver was turning the bend, close to the government printing press, and for some reason lost control of the Leyland DAF long vehicle. It tilted to the right, crushing a steel crash barrier flat and etching deep grooves in the tarmac.

The white container on the trailer fell, hitting a wall and destroying it.

Passers-by called the rescue services for help.

The 43-year-old man from San Ġwann was trapped in the cabin and required the assistance of Civil Protection Department personnel.

He was freed at about noon and was rushed to hospital in an ambulance where he was found to be in a critical condition.
