As the second week of pressing wraps up at the Delicata family winery, two more grape varieties are safely ‘tucked away’ in their fermentation tanks.

Whereas last week saw the pressing of some of the Maltese Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc varieties, this week saw the pressing of more of the same and the Malta-grown Moscato and the D.O.K. Gozo Chardonnay.

The first batch of hand-picked Moscato to be pressed, weighed in at about 14,000 kilos, coming from small individual vineyards located across Malta.

Once fermented, this will ultimately go into Delicata’s award-winning Grand Vin de Hauteville Moscato.

This delicious sweet liqueur wine won a bronze medal at last year’s 2013 Challenge International du Vin in Bordeaux, France, and another two awards this year, with a bronze medal at the 2014 Decanter World Wide Awards and a commendation at the 2014 International Wine Challenge, both of which were held in London, UK.

The Moscato grapes will also be used in the hugely popular Classic Collection sweet white wine Casella Moscato, which coincidentally is being bottled and released this week (2013 vintage) with a new label and a convenient and easy-to-use screwcap closure.

Also pressed this week were 33,000 kilos of D.O.K. Gozo Chardonnay hand-picked grapes that will produce Delicata’s premium Gozitan wine brand Victoria Heights, another award-winning wine with five medals under its belt.

Next week will see the first pressing of this year’s Viognier grapes and some red Syrah grapes, but they will be used for rosé wine production only. The Syrah grapes for red wineswill be harvested later in the month.
