Liverpool have reached an agreement to sign Spain full-back Alberto Moreno from Sevilla.

The 22-year-old defender, who has played three times for his country, will cost the Anfield club about 12 million pounds.

Moreno did not feature in Sevilla’s 2-0 loss to Real Madrid in their UEFA Super Cup clash in Cardiff on Tuesday but the Spanish club’s manager Unai Emery praised him after the match.

“Yes he is going, but he leaves with our best wishes and we thank him for everything he has done for the club,” he said.

Tabarez surgery

Uruguay World Cup coach Oscar Tabarez needs another back operation, the national football association (AUF) said.

According to media reports, under-20 coach Fabian Coito will step in as caretaker boss for two friendlies in Asia next month, against Japan in Sapporo on September 5 and South Korea in Seoul four days later.

Tabarez, who also underwent surgery on his lower back in December, has a chronic arthritic condition in his upper spine.

The 67-year-old, the most long-standing coach at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, often used a walking stick during the tournament as his team, semi-finalists in South Africa in 2010, reached the last 16.

CAS verdict on Suarez today

The outcome of Uruguay forward Luis Suarez’s appeal against his ban for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini will be announced today, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said yesterday.

Suarez was suspended for nine competitive internationals and from all football-related activity for four months after sinking his teeth into Chiellini during the second half of Uruguay’s 1-0 win in a World Cup group game on June 24.

After losing an appeal with FIFA, the Barcelona forward took his case to CAS, which conducted a hearing on the matter last Friday.

Karanka targets Chelsea players

Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka confirmed he is aiming to sign two players on loan from Chelsea after watching his side win 3-0 at Oldham in the first round of the League Cup on Tuesday.

Boro are chasing striker Patrick Bamford and midfielder George Saville as they bid to launch a Championship promotion campaign. Karanka has strong links with Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho as the pair worked together closely at Real Madrid.

Karanka said: “We are improving every day and showing we are a good team, but I also want to sign more players.

“Maybe two or three more signings will be enough for me to have the squad that I want.”

Van der Vaart going nowhere

Hamburg chairman Dietmar Beiersdorfer has ruled out the sale of Rafael Van der Vaart this summer, saying he is “counting” on the former Real Madrid midfielder.

Queens Park Rangers are the latest club to be linked with the31-year-old, who is still contracted to the northern Germany club until 2015. They need not come asking for the Dutchman, though, with Beiersdorfer saying he is a key element in his squad.

“I’m glad we have him,” he told reporters yesterday.

“Rafa is an exceptional player. I’m counting on him. He’s making a good impression.”

Van der Vaart struggled to impress last season as Hamburg only just avoided relegation.

Winger Atsu joins Everton on loan

Everton have announced the signing of winger Christian Atsu on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

Manager Roberto Martinez had made no secret of the fact that a deal was imminent for the 22-year-old and he has now got his man after the Ghana international passed a medical last night.

Atsu has also been granted a work permit and will be available when the Toffees travel to Leicester for their English Premier League opener on Saturday.

“I’m very happy to be joining Everton because it’s a great club which likes to play football, and it’s a great pleasure to be here,” he told evertontv.

Keeper Lindegaard released by United

Manchester United have released Danish goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard from his contract, according to media reports.

Sunnmorsposten, a newspaper based in Aalesund where Lindegaard played before joining United in 2010, reported that the player had been let go by the Premier League club and that his agent, Michael Stensgaard, would be making a statement today.

“Spread your wings and fly #mufc #fly #manchesterunited,” tweeted the 30-year-old Lindegaard, seemingly confirming his imminent exit from Old Trafford, where he battled with Spain’s David de Gea for the position of first-choice keeper.

He made 29 first-team appearances.
