The Nationalist Party said today that statistics showing a 4% drop in industrial production could lead to downward pressure on salaries.
The party noted that industrial production had been falling throughout this year, and the latest decline was the biggest in the EU after Greece.
In a joint statement, party spokesmen Mario de Marco, Tonio Fenech and Kristy Debono said manufacturing industry was a crucial element of the economy. The fact that manufacturing had declined month after month should be a concern for Maltese families since this created pressure on jobs and wages.
It was even more worrying that the minister responsible for the economy, Chris Cardona, was silent on the matter.
The government needed to analyse the reasons for this decline and take measures to address the situation, the PN said.
