Sergio Afric has stepped down as coach of San Ġiljan Allcare Insurance, the club said in a statement.

The Croatian took the decision in the wake of San Ġiljan’s 17-10 defeat to neighbouring rivals Neptunes Grimaldi Lines on Saturday which left the Saints 11 points behind the leaders.

Afric’s resignation has been accepted by San Ġiljan president Daniel Aquilina.

“On behalf of the club, Dr Aquilina thanked Sergio (Afric) for the work he carried out with the senior team and the youth squads,” San Ġiljan said.

Afric had taken over as coach of San Ġiljan from Karl Izzo last season.

The club committee was due to meet yesterday evening to discuss the situation and make plans for the final round of the summer competitions.

San Ġiljan will compete in the Championship Pool after securing a top-three finish at the end of the round-robin phase.

Their next fixture is against Neptunes on August 20.
