While the media has been highlighting the conflicts in Gaza and eastern Ukraine, another humanitarian crisis is attracting only minimal coverage: the ethnic and religious cleansing in Iraq and Syria.

Iraqi Christians had been given a ‘choice’ of converting to Islam and paying the Islamic jizya poll tax as a sign of subservience or death.

Now it appears that Mosul has been cleansed of all Christians, with churches desecrated, monks expelled, properties looted and Christian refugees robbed at gunpoint while being allowed to leave with only the clothes on their back.

It is time the international community woke up to the tragedy and offered support.
