A headline on July 30 read: ‘Sammut’s wrong. That’s not the name of my street!’

I do not understand why this is news because it is normal practice not to inform all concerned when the street name or even the boundary area is changed in Malta. I bought my flat, on what was Triq il-Kbira, St Julian’s, in 1990 but by government notice 652, published in The Malta Government Gazette of October 20, 1995, it was changed to Triq it-Torri, Sliema. I did not find this out until November 1999, when I had to do the research and got the Electoral Office to confirm it.

After a lot of difficulty, I got my utility bills changed to this new address. But most others in our building still get bills and other mail delivered with the original address.

The police have not moved us from St Julian’s to Sliema if we were to report any matter. Even the Sliema local council does not distribute their magazine to our area, though, at election time, we are bombarded with leaflets.

I urge the new government to set up some department that would inform all concerned when any street name is changed to avoid so much confusion.
