A five-year collective agreement for the academic staff of the University and the Junior College was signed today.

Finance Minister Edward Scicluna said the agreement includes salary increases in line with productivity and inflation.

The agreement was signed by Rector Jaunto Camilleri and representatives of the MUT and UMASA, the academic staff's union.

Education Minister Evarist Bartolo was also present.

Prof Camilleri said a 'clarification meeting' had been held with the MAM doctors' union, which had been seeking to be a party to the agreement as it represents the staff of the medical school. The University, Prof Camilleri said, had to follow the law regarding recognised unions for negotiations on collective agreements.

The agreement includes new provisions on e-learning and new timelines when corrected examination papers have to be handed in.
