It is “highly unlikely” that Malta will be affected by the deadly Ebola virus, according to infectious diseases expert Michael Borg.

“Ebola coming to Malta is a low-probability scenario. There is no need for people to panic,” said Dr Borg, quelling fears fuelled by misleading and incorrect reports circulating through social media.

Dr Borg, who is the head of Mater Dei Hospital’s Infection Control and Sterile Services Departments, spoke to Times of Malta soon after delivering a lecture about the virus to almost 400 healthcare professionals.

He said that as a precaution, the hospital is upgrading its high-security isolation room as ensuring safety suits are fully functional.

Doctors have been given a fact sheet on procedures and a number to call if they see patients with suspect symptoms. Officials at ports and airports have been instructed to notify the health authorities about any sick people entering Malta.

The virus spreads by contact with infected blood and bodily fluids and the current outbreak is killing between 50 and 60 per cent of people infected.
