Times of Malta reports that illegal roadworks are being made on Comino. It also says that an Eritrean infant boy who has lost his mother is to be allowed to join his father in Malta. 

The Malta Independent focuses on government flip flops on the Martin Galea hostage case. It also says that Franco Debono is no longer law commissioner but now leads a five-member commission. 

In-Nazzjon reports that the Labour party is trying to dispute official figures showing only a small increase in the median wage in a year. 

l-orizzont says thieves are marking apartments for burglary by scribbling on intercoms.

The overseas press

China’s broadcaster CCTV reports at least 357 people have been killed and more than 1,800 injured following a strong earthquake in south west China. More than 12,000 homes collapsed when the 6.3 quake struck. Reports from the region say rescuers are struggling to reach those affected in more remote towns.

Haaretz says the Israeli military was observing a seven-hour ceasefire in most of the Gaza Strip to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid and for displaced Palestinians to return to their homes. The humanitarian truce would not apply in areas of the southern Gaza town of Rafah where Israeli forces were still operating. A Defence Ministry official said they would fight back if attacked.

Meanwhile, The Guardian reported the US and UN were united in their condemnation of an attack on a third UN school, which left 10 Palestinians dead. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said it was “a moral outrage and a criminal act” and c alled for those responsible to be held accountable. The US declared it was “appalled” by the “disgraceful” attack. The victims were queuing for food when the missile landed near the entrance.

Le Monde says the French and German presidents have commemorated the 100th anniversary of Germany's declaration of war on France on August 3, 1914. François Hollande and his German counterpart, Joachim Gauck, made a joint tribute in Alsace to soldiers killed during World War One. Later today, events will be held in Belgium to mark the UK's declaration of war on Germany.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports at least 25 delegates who attended Melbourne’s high-profile AIDS conference intend to seek asylum in Australia after failing to board their flights home last week. The men and women are mostly from African countries including Tanzania, Uganda and Ethiopia.

According to Fox News, Kent Brantly, one of two American aid workers infected with the deadly Ebola virus as they helped battle an outbreak in West Africa, “seems to be improving”. The aid worker was flown back to the United States from Africa for treatment on Saturday.

Metro says one of the UK's most wanted men has been captured by armed police in South Africa. Martin Evans had been serving a 21-year sentence for drug smuggling and fraud and went on the run from prison while on a home visit three years ago. The 52-year-old was a former Young Businessman of the Year for Wales. He turned to crime after his double glazing firm collapsed.

The BBC reports hundreds of people in the Spanish town of Daimiel have marched to demand the release of a Roman Catholic priest detained in El Salvador. Father Antonio Rodriguez, who was born in Daimiel, has been accused of smuggling mobile phones to imprisoned members of El Salvador notorious gangs. Demonstrators say Father Tonio has dedicated much of his life to helping gang members turn away from crime.

Sky News says Kylie Minogue and Lulu were among the stars who performed at the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, marking the end of 11 days of sporting action. The athletes emerged from almost 700 tents dotted throughout the stadium as the crowd cheered. The competition, featuring 17 different sports, saw more than 140 Commonwealth and several world records broken. England topped the medal table, followed by Australia, Canada and host nation Scotland.

Football: Michigan Daily reports Manchester United defeated European champions Real Madrid 3-1 in front of a record US crowd of 109,318 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Saturday's attendance broke a record set at the 1984 Olympic final between France and Brazil. United now face Liverpool in today's International Champions Cup final.
