Two Premier League managers who were sacked last season were Michael Laudrup, at Swansea, and Andre Villas-Boas who lost his job at Tottenham Hotspur.

Chairman Huw Jenkins had been so proud with Laudrup after the Swans became the first Welsh club to win the League Cup in 2012/13 that the Dane was retained.

Laudrup, who had taken over from Brendan Rodgers after the latter joined Liverpool, guided Swansea to a ninth-place finish in the Premiership the previous season – their highest finish since .

The relationship between Jenkins and Laudrup became strained last season and, after a run of poor results, the club chairman lost patience with his manager.

“It is a decision we have taken reluctantly,” Jenkins said at the time.

“But it’s a decision made in the best interests of Swansea City.”

Yet, Jenkins should have spoken to Laudrup who later claimed that he was informed of his dismissal by e-mail.

Gary Monk took over on a temporary basis but he has now been awarded a permanent deal after leading Swansea to survival.

The Swansea fans were disappointed with the form of most of their foreign players since Laudrup left.

But, £12-million Ivorian striker Wilfried Bony came good, building a reputation as a reliable goalscorer in the Premiership.

One of the season’s highlights was the wonder goal scored by Jonjo Shelvey, from 45 yards out, against Aston Villa. It was the moment when Swansea secured their top-flight status.

At White Hart Lane, Villas-Boas just could never get his teeth into this squad.

The Portuguese spent £110 million on transfers to try and improve the squad following Gareth Bale’s record move to Real Madrid but the new signings failed to make the desired impact.

After the 5-0 home thrashing by Liverpool, Villas-Boas’s days were numbered. While the Spurs’ squad had strength in depth, Villas-Boas failed to get the best out of his players.

Former player Tim Sherwood replaced him on an interim basis.

Eriksen shines

Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen proved to be a bargain buy after joining Spurs from Ajax for at £11.5 million.

The 22-year-old midfielder scored 10 goals during his first season at Tottenham and was named the club’s player of the year.

Chairman Daniel Levy has since parted company with Sherwood and appointed Argentine Mauricio Pocchettino who impressed during his spell as Southampton manager.

In addition to the domestic cups, Swansea were also involved in the Europa League but this disrupted their campaign as they had a thin squad.

After going through from their group, Swansea lost 3-1 to Napoli on aggregate in the Last 32 stage.

In the FA Cup, they pulled off an upset after knocking out Manchester United but bowed out in the fifth round after slipping 3-1 to Everton.

They easily surrendered their hold on the League Cup after losing 3-1 to Birmingham in the third round.

Tottenham also competed in the Europa League, going down to Benfica 5-3 on aggregate in the Last 16.

In the FA Cup, Tottenham lost to neighbours Arsenal in a north-London derby 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium in the fourth round.

In the League Cup, they fell to another London club, West Ham, losing 2-1 in the quarter-finals at White Hart Lane.
