A man who led the police on a high-speed chase across Sliema more than two years ago has been jailed 12 months.

Joseph Sharfid, 36, from Valletta, was found guilty of running over a policeman’s foot and damaging a police car.

He was chased by the officers from the Rapid Intervention Unit in March 2012 after breaching bail conditions.

He had then pleaded guilty to breaching bail conditions and was jailed for four months but denied the charges related to the car chase.

Magistrate Neville Camilleri now found him guilty of slightly injuring Police Constable Adrian Zahra, breaching the peace and damaging the police car.

Magistrate Camilleri said that he was handing down an effective jail term in the hope that Mr Sharfid would change his life once and for all.

In March 2011, Mr Sharfid was jailed for six months after also pleading guilty to breaching bail conditions.
