Full-back Ryan Bertrand has joined Southampton on a season-long loan from fellow Premier League side Chelsea.

The 24-year-old spent last season on loan at Aston Villa, and will fill the void left by Luke Shaw, who has moved to Manchester United.

“He is a top player who will bring a lot of quality to the team,” manager Ronald Koeman told the club’s website .

“He has experience at the highest level and is an exciting, attacking player, which is what I like to see in my full-backs.”

Algeria’s Mbolhi heads to MLS

Algeria goalkeeper Rais Mbolhi has joined Major League Soccer side Philadelphia Union from CSKA Sofia on a three-year contract, the 31-times Bulgarian champions said.

The French-born Mbolhi impressed during the World Cup in Brazil where Algeria reached the knock out stages. The African side were beaten 2-1 by Germany after extra-time but Mbolhi was named man of the match.

Mbolhi, the most capped foreign keeper in the Bulgarian league, joined CSKA from Russia’s Krilya Sovetov in 2013, having already been loaned twice to the Sofia-based club.

Austria captain Janko joins Sydney FC

Austria captain Marc Janko will play in Australia’s A-League next season after being announced as Sydney FC’s marquee international player for next season yesterday.

The 31-year-old striker replaces Italy and Juventus great Alessandro Del Piero, who left the twice-champions at the end of last season after two years at the club.

Del Piero generated a huge amount of publicity for the league. He failed to help the team past the first round of the play-offs, however, and Janko’s signing is an indication of a more practical approach by new coach Graham Arnold as he looks to win the club its first title since 2010.

Copenhagen fans attacked in Kiev

Fighting between rival fans caused a 15-minute interruption to the Champions League qualifier between Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk and FC Copenhagen at the Olimpiysky stadium in Kiev on Wednesday.

Supporters of the Danish club were attacked by a group of people believed to be Dnipro fans and forced to seek refuge under the stands with referee Andre Marriner postponing the start of the second half for 15 minutes.

FC Copenhagen issued a letter of complaint to UEFA, a representative of the Danish club told a news conference after the 0-0 draw.

A representative of Dnipro fans accused Danish supporters of sparking the fighting by waving a Russian flag.

Cavani: I’m still happy in Paris

Paris St Germain striker Edinson Cavani has insisted he is happy at the club despite reports suggesting he had asked to leave this summer.

The 27-year-old Uruguayan moved to Paris from Napoli last summer in a huge deal worth a reported £55 million, but was said to be unhappy at playing second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the French capital.

“I am sure to stay, why would I not?” Cavani told L’Equipe while with PSG in Beijing yesterday morning.

“I’m well in Paris. I have a contract to honour. I’m calm, I’d rather be here. I feel good here.

“However, I know it does not depend solely on the player but also on the club.”

Arrigo Sacchi resigns from FIGC post

Former Italy and Milan boss Arrigo Sacchi has left his role as technical coordinator of youth development with the Italian Football Federation after four years.

The 68-year-old cited overwhelming stress as the main reason behind his decision to step down.

He told FIGC.it: “I am leaving behind an assignment which I care a lot about, but I have a terrible adversary – one I was able to manage for 22 or 23 years but that is now winning the battle – and that is stress.”

Suarez ‘too good  for the Gunners’

Steven Gerrard has revealed he told Luis Suarez he was too good to join Arsenal when the North Londoners bid for him last year.

Gerrard understood that Suarez still had ambitions to leave this summer, but proved right in his prediction that he could earn himself a move to Spanish giants Barcelona with an outstanding final season at Anfield.

Barca have paid £75 million for his services this summer despite the four-month ban he received for biting Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.

“Last summer, when Luis was out in the cold, I told him, ‘Don’t go to Arsenal’,” Gerrard told several national newspapers.

“With all due respect to them, I told him he was too good for Arsenal.”
