The governemnt this afternoon welcomed Eurostat figures showing a further cut in unemployment in Malta.

It noted that unemployment had decreased for the eighth month in succession and the country now had the lowest unemployment rate since Eurostat started compiling the data in January 2000.

The unemployment rate in June was 5.6%, compared to 6.3% in the last month of the PN government, the government observed.

It said that under the present administration, the number of people seeking work was down by some 1,000.

In June, unemployment in Malta was the third lowest in the EU after Germany and Austria, with a difference of just 0.6 per cent. This showed, the government said, that it was not true that Malta was facing a jobs crisis, as Opposition spokesmen had claimed.
