The Philippines has chartered a ship to evacuate Filipino workers in Libya to Malta.

Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario told the media this morning that a ship that can carry up to 1,000 is being readied to evacuate the workers as the situation in Libya worsens.

There are some 13,000 Filipino workers in Libya.

Filipino workers were similarly evacuated to Malta during the uprising against Col Gaddafi in 2011.

Some 40 Filipino workers arrived in Malta from Libya on Sunday and five more on Monday.

The Philippine Embassy in Libya has relocated its non-core staff to Tunisia.
