A German girl was rescued by helicopter this afternoon after she found herself in difficulties while swimming off Xwjeni Bay in Gozo.

The teenager was unable to return to shore but was able to seek shelter in a cave  below a low cliff.

A rescuer was lowered to the cave to check her condition and she was then hoisted onboard an AFM Alouette helicopter and taken to Gozo general hospital. She was not seriously injured.

Two French tourists drowned in the same bay in August last year and a French diver drowned there in October.
