A Libyan man claimed in court today that he was assaulted by police at St Julian's police station when he asked them why they had arrested him.

Eihab Ahmed Elsadi, 31, from Gzira, was arrested yesterday evening after the police found him drunk.

He tried to run away from the officers and got onto a bus, but he was  taken off and then taken to the St Julian's police station. He was kept there and then released but before leaving he asked the officers why they had arrested him and an argument broke out leading to him to suffer injuries, his lawyer Anthony Cutajar told Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit.

The Magistrate ordered that he should be seen by a doctor and his  injuries to be documented.

He was granted bail against a personal guarantee of €15,000.
