A remarkable 80 per cent personalbest rate was achieved by 58 Sirens swimmers at the National Championships held last week.
As the 2013/14 season drew to a close, swimmers from Sirens’ development, junior, senior and elite squads demonstrated their passion and commitment to the sport with a spate of improved results.
Many swimmers obtained personal bests in every race, winning a total 70 medals – 25 gold, 25 silver and 20 bronze.
In the 50m freestyle, Andrew Chetcuti powered down the pool to smash his national record in a time of 23.45 to massive cheers from fellow swimmers and the crowd present at Tal-Qroqq.
In a statement, Sirens congratulated all swimmers who took part and expressed their gratitude to coaches Catalin Stan, Lara Deguara and Iana Said for their contribution.
“The fact that our swimmers were able to achieve such results at the end of the season is indeed a tribute to our coaches,” Sirens said in a statement.
As well as watching Chetcuti in action, his team-mates also benefited from some of his useful training tips during the Nationals.
Sirens’ success follows an excellent performance by Jeremy Bugeja, Charis Ceccarelli and Kim Castelletti at the FISEC Games in Vienna, held earlier this month.
Further fine showings by Neeve Cauchi, Vanessa Nairalgas, Luke Grech Carr, Leah Tanti and Jan Culic are to be noted as they all gained entry into the National Sports School from September.
