Holland defender Stefan de Vrij is to have a medical ahead of a move to Lazio, the Serie A club have announced.

The 22-year-old impressed in his country’s run to third place in the World Cup and scored in their opening 5-1 rout of defending champions Spain.

That saw him linked with a move away from Feyenoord, with speculation outgoing Oranje boss Louis van Gaal was set to take him to Manchester United.

Lazio appear to have won the race, though, and wrote on their official Twitter feed: “At the airport tonight and medical examinations tomorrow. Welcome to @Stefandevrij, best defender in Brazil 2014! # Sslazio.”

De Vrij has won 19 international caps in total since making his debut against Belgium in August 2012.

He is a product of Feyenoord’s youth academy and made his first-team debut in 2009.
