A hundred couples tied the knot yesterday in a mass wedding held in the first post-World Cup event inside the Brazilian capital’s Estadio Nacional. The collective civil marriage ceremony was held on the football stadium’s pitch. It was the 10th mass wedding held in Brasilia as part of the “Soul Mate” project organised by the city’s justice secretariat.

Brasilia’s last mass wedding was held three months ago when 105 couples were married. The Estadio Nacional hosted seven games at the recently concluded World Cup.

Trio of naked hamburger thieves

A waitress has dubbed the trio of naked hamburger thieves who broke into an eatery “dumb, dumber and dumbest”.

Waitress Nancy Sansevieri was still laughing after police released surveillance video showing the college-aged men – two naked and one clad in underwear – stealing 60 hamburgers from Doc’s Beach House in Bonita Beach, Florida. Police say the men broke in early yesterday and left a trail of red peppers on the beach.

Doc’s general manager Lou Bangert said that he has never witnessed such a crime in the restaurant’s 27-year history. Thieves have broken in and taken money from the cash register, but he says no one has ever slammed through a door completely naked looking for beef.

Snake rumour but no evidence

A huge exotic snake reportedly slithering around New Jersey’s largest lake is apparently a suburban legend. Or the snake is simply not hungry.

The state has stopped looking for the reptile after scientists failed to find any evidence of it in Lake Hopatcong and traps baited with chicken were left untouched. Three unconfirmed sightings this month of a snake, perhaps an anaconda as long as 16ft, raised concerns among visitors and swimmers.

Environmental Protection Department spokesman Larry Ragonese said state wildlife experts have found no scientific or biological evidence that an exotic snake is in the area. There are also no signs of droppings or skin.

Alligator escape is no legend

An owner of a zoo in the US said a 12-inch alligator has escaped, possibly with some help from a tortoise.

The alligator named Carlos reportedly got out of an enclosure at the GarLyn Zoo near Naubinway, Michegan. He was spotted by people nearby, who called police, but he was not caught.

Gary Moore, who runs the zoo, says he suspects the alligator slipped under a fence, adding a large tortoise that walks in the area, wearing away dirt, likely was an inadvertent accomplice in Carlos’ getaway.

‘Sumo wrestlers’ in 5-km fun run

Dozens of fun runners donned giant sumo wrestler suits yesterday to take part in a race around a park.

After a “mass inflation” which saw the eye-catching outfits be blown up, the runners jogged, walked or wobbled the 5km course in Battersea Park, south London. Many accessorised their suits with masks – including some of members of the Royal Family.

The event previously set a Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people running in sumo suits.

The race is raising money for the charity Link Community Development, which works with governments and communities to improve the quality of education for children in sub-Saharan Africa.
